Lubomierz

  • Lubomierz

From the early 1990s, Wisława Szymborska used to come to Lubomierz to spend her holidays here. At the time, she was not a famous person to the local inhabitants. Everyone knew she was a poet, but her name was not really recognisable.  She used to live at the Nachman family house for a month – usually between the 15th of June and the 15th of July.

Everyone knew she was a poet, but her name was not really recognisable.  She used to live at the Nachman family house for a month – usually between the 15th of June and the 15th of July.

The Przysłop Pass was recommended to the Krakow poet by her friend, Professor Wiesław Czyż, who used to come to these parts for years. For the Nachman family, Wisława Szymborska was just another holidaymaker. As Anna Nachman recalled, the future Nobel Prize winner started talking about herself only after some time. She presented her poems and achievements.
The poet also spent her holidays in Lubomierz three months before she received the Nobel Prize for Literature. This was Szymborska’s last peaceful holiday. The inhabitants of Lubomierz were shocked to find out that she was granted this honourable award.

Before 1996, Wisława Szymborska could be seen on mountain paths much more frequently than in the recent years. She never made longer hikes though. The poet’s holiday was very specific and mostly involved... work. After breakfast, she used to retreat to her room and write. She did not like any commotion around herself.

The inhabitants at whose house the poet used to stay recall that Wisława Szymborska preferred meat dishes. She was not demanding when it came to the menu. She loved making trips to Mszana Dolna’s fairs and markets. Since 2003, the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature started renting a small holiday house that belonged to the Białas family and was situated near the Nachman family house. She used to stay there with her friend Barbara Czałczyńska. Her last visit to Lubomierz took place a year before she died.
