Wadowice

  • Karol Wojtyła

In this town, situated in the Silesian Foothills on the River Skawa, which has less than 20 thousand citizens, its most famous resident, Karol Wojtyła (Pope John Paul II, 1920-2005) was born. Orphaned at the age of nine by the death of his mother, Emilia née Kaczorowska, he came back to the streets of his hometown in a poem devoted to her (1950): “My place passes by in memory. Silence of remote streets does not elapse/ captured in space like glass,/ which in clear pupils was breaking down into light and sapphire -/ Words of a child, on whom this silence rises, are the closest/ «mum – mum»./ And again, it slips to the bottom of the very streets as an invisible bird.”

In Gorzeń Górny, which is located to the south of Wadowice, there is a museum devoted to Emil Zegadłowicz (1888-1941) – a poet, novelist and playwright, one of the founders of Polish expressionism. It is situated in a historical manor, the family estate of the Zegadłowicz family. The artist lived in Wadowice only from time to time (his father works as a teacher in the very middle school from which he graduated). [ezp].
